Cattle conference: Learn Danish and get more education

In the session Coping with the Danes, herd manager Sergii Reva told his story about his time and life in Denmark – and the differences he has experienced between Danish and Ukrainian work culture.

Sergii Reva came to Denmark in 2006 and has been working on the same farm in Ejstrupholm since then. He has worked his way up to becoming the herd manager.

“In Ukraine, it was difficult to get a job in 2006 so I chose to go to Denmark. A lot of things were different here. What especially surprised me was the fact that our leader worked together with us. That would never be the case in Ukraine,” Sergii explained. Another thing that surprised him was how his leader trusted his workers.

“Our leader left the key in the tractor and left the stable open all day. That was really new to me,” Sergii said. He decided to stay in Denmark and after some time his wife and daughter joined him here.

More education resulted in more responsibility

After having worked in Denmark for some years, Sergii decided to go to agricultural college.

“I thought that more education would be good for my career – and I also wanted new ideas and new inspiration about how to take care of the animals,” he explained. Sergii could have chosen a school with courses in English but chose to join a regular Danish agricultural college – Bygholm Landbrugsskole.

“I really enjoyed my time there – and I really appreciate the Danish educational system. We had free access to all materials, we had such good communication with our teachers and several excursions gave us a lot of practical information.”

After graduating from Bygholm Landbrugsskole, Sergii was given more responsibility on the farm. He became responsible for milking, treating and registering the cows. And today he holds the title of herd manager.

Sergii’s advice for new wokers

As a herd manager Sergii takes care of educating new workers. And one of his main recommendations to them is to learn Danish.

“Even though your plan is to stay in Denmark only for a shorter period – plans can change. And speaking Danish is just necessary to achieve full integration. It is so much easier to learn about Danish culture and tradition – and to make Danish friends, when you speak the language. Furthermore, it makes you able to communicate so much better with the veterinarian and other advisers that come to the farm. And just as importantly – it makes you able to work with the it-systems Bovisoft and DMS,” Sergii explained.

Finally, he recommends all new workers to be responsible and honest:

“If you for instance break something or milk a treated cow by mistake – tell your farmer. It is ok to make a mistake – but you must tell him, so he can take care of it. And you will find out that your farmer will appreciate your honesty and the fact that he can trust you.”
